Do 4 Self Concert - 1994

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xmg0In6hmPQ
Do 4 Self Concert - held in 1994 at the Westridge Civic Centre in Westridge, Mitchell's Plain, Cape Town, South Africa.

To share this is to share a minute part of Hip Hop history from the Mecca of South African Hip Hop, if not the entire Africa continent, Mitchell's Plain.  There's not enough words I can use to express the influence we had on the rest of the Cape Flats and the rest of South Africa.

WE had the best of the best, from Writers aka Grafitti artists, BBoys (referred to in the 80's when we started, as Breakdancers or Breakers), Emcees and DJ's.  It was the home to the first Chapter in Africa of the Universal Zulu Nation, which was started in Westridge by King Jamo.  There's tons I can go into, but that will take away the focus from the concert itself with the mini interviews in-between.  The thing to note about this is that the performances are by a wide range of artists who ranged from I'd say 8 years old to maybe mid 30's.  Why I mention this is because this sort of platform no longer exists and if it does, then I am out of the loop.........enjoy.

Park Jams - Westridge Mitchell's Plain

Park Jams
Not sure if it's due COVID 19 or if it's because it's a Saturday and the whether was #lekker, but I miss a good Park Jam.

My 13 year old and 11 year old enjoyed a good one when they were babies up to age 7 and 9 and then it dwindled and my youngest never got the same exposure to Hip Hop's Park Jams.  The #EMCEES on the M.I.C., the #WRITERS getting up, the #BBOYS doing their thing and the #TURNTABLIST beat juggling and scratching.

AND on occasion we have rappers pitching up to launch their new material....

The late 90's to the last bits of the 20teens, 2 Hip Hop Headz and their willing couplings had Westridge alive with Park Jams and then towards "the end" the newer cats took over with their blend keeping it true to themselves.  Over the years it remained solid, although the overseas writers or just random dudes from some European country had blessed us with their presence.  Big ups to all the Headz who we part of those Park Jams and the new Park Jams that will definitely come once we may partake in social events.

Here are photos from the 20teens
