The commercial lie

The worst time of the year is......drum roll please......is November through January, due to competitive buying and then the start of the new school year with uniform purchases and stationary (please buy extra extras because you might need it, perhaps).

Coming from a retail and a sales driven background, the retailers make a killing this time of the year.

Competitive buying, the buying patterns are almost always the same, which is based on;
1) What did other people buy their children last year and competitively speaking, how did you as the buyer (note I did not say parent, but the term buyer was used) stand-up to them last year? What are they buying this year and can you be "cooler" and get more for less.
2) Can you out do last year, but spend less.
3) What did I not get as a child that I can now give to my children.

Less is more, never. Each generation creates these "Want monsters".  Each generation of parents think and say the same thing, which is "I am going to give my children everything I never had", which is a huge huge huge mistake.

Mistakes like these, for this new generation of parents and future generations is that we all create a "Want monster" that becomes bigger and bigger until we have all been chomped up by our monsters.

I at first I thought that I #envy the #tvshowhosts #bloggers and #vloggers who #travel and #getpaidtotravel but then realised that I might not #enjoy taking all those #beautifulphotos and not being able to return and #experience some of that #magic again.

It would be cool to have an ongoing #travellog and return to those very same #places #towns #countries #cities #clubs #bars #restaurants #beaches and #document the changes over a #5year period.

Not only would you be documenting the lives of people, but of thoses lovely inanimate objects.

To borrow a name from an American/Canadian sci-fi show and a local South African #travelshow and changing it slightly, I would call it "The somewhere guy".

Terrible title I know, but it's a #workingtitle in the full sense of the term.

Sneakers and giving back

Great #design and pushing the CSI in as many areas of all of our lives is great, but sometimes it feels not only slow but also a bit of #hitandmiss but...... I think things will pick-up.

I understand brand loyalty and following trends etc., because that was my #breadandbutter for a few years, BUT some of the sneakers out there should not be out there.  They slap a new #colourway on something and hype it and #joesoap buys into because the ad said so.  To design is not an easy job, but some of the sneakers were designed by talentless cats who gave a great back story to the exec's and the exec's bought it hook line and sinker (I'd prefer to say stinker though).

Day 3 of the 10 albums that made an impact on me was Captain Rock's The Return of Captain Rock

Then I cheated for Day 4, because 45's had an impact on me because it was the first time I was exposed to instrumentals, which if you first learn to sample and you are looking for the same track by the same band where you can cut-up what you want and not worry about a split second of vocals that might ruin the loop

Mitchell's Plain: Golden age of Graffiti

You can't live in the past, but you can watch it. This is footage from our (Mitchell's Plain, Cape Town) Hip Hop Golden Age in the 1990's, when the various Elements were practiced at the highest level in Mitchell's Plain.

The footage is of artists DarkoFBI, Falco aka Falko aka Oklaf, Ice7, Can2, Sky, Wealz, Mr E aka Mystery etc. piecing at a former nightclub called Westridge City (now it's a church).

Park Jams were running and if not then there's something going on. You would run into writers from allover the world in Mitchell's Plain, we had cats from Germany, Sweden, France, Australia, the UK.......

Day 2 of the 10 Albums which had an impact on me, was The Gladiators.  This was discovered through a older friend during the 80's and has stuck with me forIver.  I still have a "back-up" of the vinyl on cassette.

Making the rounds on Facebook is the "What is the 10 albums that influenced you" list.


I don't have 10, I have too much.  Parental units and other family influences made my early listening quite eclectic.

This played constantly in our household as well as her other LP's.  I think that this and Isaac Hayes made my love for Rap and Hip Hop deeper as I already understood the concept of "The Rap" when I was introduced in the early 80's to "Rap music".
