1995 - Graffiti competition held at The Farm in Mitchell's Plain

1995, WHAT a year it was. It seemed like the influx of Writers would not stop. Cape Town and #MitchellsPlain in particular was spoilt rotten with Writers coming from Australia, France, UK, Germany and Sweden and an endless line of other countries and then it did stop and then we had trickles here and there. It was fun to witness our #writers like #ice7 #sky189 #wealz #falko #piece with #darkofbi #mistery #cantwo #loomit on our soil.

Overspray doccie featuring Cape Town Writers.

I actually don't know how I feel about this pseudo-doccie. I know most of the Writers personally, so all I am happy about is the fact that they are on film.

The best part for me though, is the last few seconds, literally the last 4/5 seconds.

GraveDiggaProductionz background
The late 80's and 90's, was what one might consider the Golden Age of Hip Hop in Cape Town and specifically in an area on the Cape Flats, Mitchell's Plain.

The various Art forms within the Culture of Hip Hop was taken to another dimension in this area and it became the Hip Hop Mecca in Africa and spawned many great Artistes in the various Arts via our membership and mentorship within the Universal Zulu Nation Chapters spread throughout the Cape Flats by King Jamo (who hails from Mitchell's Plain).

In the early 90's an umbrella group formed out of members of the Universal Zulu Nation Westridge Chapter and Eastridge Chapter respectively, known as GraveDiggaProductionz.

The original 4 Headz of GDP:
Shy - formally Chapter leader of the UZN Westridge Chapter and an Emcee with groups $ell-Out-Syndicate and OnTheRun.

Sparrow X - Spiritual leader, Strategist and Analyst.

Ice - BBoyKingz member and one of the most prolific Writers/Graffiti Artistes in Africa.

Mr Trevep One, The Brown Prismatic One - A Writer albiet Toy, with ZBC and the TVA Crews, before joining $ell-Out-Syndicate.

The members of GDP expanded and included "Non-Headz" who loved and grew-up in and around Hip Hop.  Of the most exciting additions to the GDP family were Emcees Ansley aka MicArtistFlash: The Reason Rap Rules (MAFR3) aka Gatsby and JonWun who formed the group Primitive Instinct.

Then there was Don Owl a beat creator extraordinaire and Rap/Ragga artist, who along with Jon and Mr Trevrep formed a live band called Masturbating Sound Waves for a One-Night Only gig.

Last BUT not least is StrongArm Doug, the man behind the board, producer and engineer of the soundscapes that lived in our minds. Doug has been part of the South African music scene since the 1990's and performed with the Supergroups of all Supergroups in Cape Town, known as MoodPhase5ive.

Collectible Vinyl Toys #dunny

Music/Art/Time

Writer's block is a killer and then when it flows again, it's a KILLER.

Originally I, aka Flesh Krumblez, had planned to finish my Look of Love Ep the #beattape and Ep as Mr Trevrep 1ne, The Brown Prismatic 1ne with features by ZuluRa, by May.  Bbbbut I keep on adding beats and changing things up.

Time and being a "creative" is sometimes not great bed-fellows. 8 Songs turned into 20, but the others feel like things you write down in an exam to make the pages look fuller.

I suppose the disjointed one's can be for the Ep..... DisjOinted.

Heroes

Sometimes we get to meet our heroes and sit with our peers and if you can build up the courage, you take a photo with them too.

I was extremely proud and humbled at the same time, because this Man (#chuckd) we Hip Hop Headz view as a GOD and TRUTH SPEAKER, spoke to us as a man and a humble one at that.

Do 4 Self Concert - 1994

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xmg0In6hmPQ
Do 4 Self Concert - held in 1994 at the Westridge Civic Centre in Westridge, Mitchell's Plain, Cape Town, South Africa.

To share this is to share a minute part of Hip Hop history from the Mecca of South African Hip Hop, if not the entire Africa continent, Mitchell's Plain.  There's not enough words I can use to express the influence we had on the rest of the Cape Flats and the rest of South Africa.

WE had the best of the best, from Writers aka Grafitti artists, BBoys (referred to in the 80's when we started, as Breakdancers or Breakers), Emcees and DJ's.  It was the home to the first Chapter in Africa of the Universal Zulu Nation, which was started in Westridge by King Jamo.  There's tons I can go into, but that will take away the focus from the concert itself with the mini interviews in-between.  The thing to note about this is that the performances are by a wide range of artists who ranged from I'd say 8 years old to maybe mid 30's.  Why I mention this is because this sort of platform no longer exists and if it does, then I am out of the loop.........enjoy.

Park Jams - Westridge Mitchell's Plain

Park Jams
Not sure if it's due COVID 19 or if it's because it's a Saturday and the whether was #lekker, but I miss a good Park Jam.

My 13 year old and 11 year old enjoyed a good one when they were babies up to age 7 and 9 and then it dwindled and my youngest never got the same exposure to Hip Hop's Park Jams.  The #EMCEES on the M.I.C., the #WRITERS getting up, the #BBOYS doing their thing and the #TURNTABLIST beat juggling and scratching.

AND on occasion we have rappers pitching up to launch their new material....

The late 90's to the last bits of the 20teens, 2 Hip Hop Headz and their willing couplings had Westridge alive with Park Jams and then towards "the end" the newer cats took over with their blend keeping it true to themselves.  Over the years it remained solid, although the overseas writers or just random dudes from some European country had blessed us with their presence.  Big ups to all the Headz who we part of those Park Jams and the new Park Jams that will definitely come once we may partake in social events.

Here are photos from the 20teens
